Legion of Mary

PCJ Legion of Mary Group

Legion is the army of Mary whose duty in the Church, is to reach out and torch the souls of her children and bring them back to her son. According to the Legion Handbook, “It is an association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of all graces (who is fair as the moon, bright as the sun, and to –Satan and his legionaries-terrible as an army set in the battle array), have formed themselves into a legion for the service in the welfare which is perpetually waged by the Church against the world and its evil powers.” It started in Dublin, Ireland at 8 p.m. on 7th, Sept, 1921 during the eve of the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady. It has now spread all over the world in prayer and service. Five popes who lived at its initial stage commented about it in summary as, the true face of the Catholic Church, association which fell on the fertile soil of the Church. The popes who acknowledged Legion of Mary in their letters are; Pius XI,16TH, Sept,1933, PiusXII, July 22nd, 1953, John XXIII, July 13th ,1960,Paul,January 6th, 1965, and John Paul II on 30th October, 1982. All these letters were by those Holy Fathers to Frank Duff our Founder in appreciation and blessing on gift of Our Lady.

To fulfill its goal of winning soul for Christ, the members are required to be practicing Catholics who receive and have received sacraments mainly Holy Communion and go for Penance. In many cases, some Catholic who don’t receive Holy Communion and desire to join legion of Mary when challenged by this condition, they end up accusing the system. The youth say it is for the old people because they feel cannot manage the conditions. Others say they are busy and cannot attend weekly meeting as it requires.

All these are excuses which our mother can easily provide solutions as she did at the wedding of Cana. You cannot love the son and ignore the mother, in fact it the mother who can introduce you to the son because she knows him better. For those who say, they don’t have time, there are avenues to be auxiliary members who are exempted from weekly meeting. Therefore, in PCJ, we meet every Wednesdays at 2 p.m.in year 1A classroom, the meeting takes 1hr. We have existed for less than 2 years, but have grown in great number of over 30 members.
